What Is Exterior Insulation (ETICS)?
An External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS) — commonly called facade insulation or rendering — is a multi-layer system applied to the outer walls of a building. It dramatically improves energy efficiency while giving the building a fresh, modern appearance.
💡 Antalya advantage: In buildings exposed to intense summer sun, a quality ETICS system can reduce air-conditioning use by 30–40%, delivering a fast return on investment.
Insulation Material Comparison
| Material | Thermal Performance | Fire Class | Sound Insulation | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EPS (Polystyrene) | Excellent | E (combustible) | Poor | Budget |
| Mineral/Stone Wool | Good | A1 (non-combustible) | Good | Mid–High |
| XPS | Superior | E (combustible) | Poor | Mid |
| Phenolic Panel | Superior | B (low combustion) | Medium | High |
In Antalya EPS is most commonly used; however, fire regulations may require mineral wool for tall and multi-storey buildings.
Benefits of Facade Insulation
- Energy savings — 25–35% reduction in heating and cooling costs
- Indoor comfort — Noticeably smaller temperature swings in summer and winter
- Damp and mould prevention — Moves the dew point outward, eliminating moisture on interior walls
- Property value — Improves energy performance certificate rating; raises sale/rental value
- Aesthetic renewal — Gives the building a clean, contemporary look
- Noise reduction — Especially with mineral wool, external noise is reduced
Installation Process
- Surface preparation — Remove loose render and paint, repair cracks
- Starter profile — Set a levelled base profile at the bottom row
- Board adhesion — Glue boards to the wall with special adhesive mortar
- Mechanical fixings — Anchor each board with expansion plugs
- Mesh embedding — Apply corner beads and fibreglass mesh over the surface
- Base coat — Apply the first render coat over the mesh
- Finish coat / paint — Mineral, silicone or acrylic exterior render or paint
Antalya-Specific Considerations
- Salt air — Buildings near the coast need salt-resistant materials and coatings
- High UV — UV-resistant, colour-stable exterior paint is essential
- Temperature cycling — Flexible render components to handle thermal expansion/contraction
- Rainy season — November–March is wet; scheduling must account for drying windows
ℹ️ Combined savings tip: Renewing windows, balconies and roof overhangs at the same time as the insulation means one scaffolding setup covers everything — significant cost savings.
